President of the Republic of Srpska meets with Director for Western Europe, Western Balkans and Turkey at the European External Action Service in Brussels

The President of the Republic of Srpska Željka Cvijanović met today in Brussels with the Director for Western Europe, Western Balkans and Turkey at the European External Action Service Angelina Eichhorst and discussed the political situation in BiH as well as the paralysis of joint institutions due to obstructions to the government formation.

At the meeting, it was pointed out that an urgent formation of the new Council of Ministers was a necessary precondition for ensuring institutional stability in BiH and the continuation of its progress in the European integration process.

The Republic of Srpska President stressed that the Republic of Srpska was the only one which fully formed the government after last year’s elections, and pointed out its firm commitment to moving faster towards the European Union.

“In the same way that it is crucial for the European Union and its member states to implement the reform processes and to enable this organisation to function effectively and steadily, for us, who are in the process of joining or accessing the EU, it is essential to know how the European Union, whose member we would like to be, will look like”, said the President Cvijanović.

During her visit to Brussels, the President Cvijanović also met with Christian Danielsson, Director-General for EU Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations.

Among other things, the meeting focused on the implementation of EU financial assistance to BiH, particularly in the fields of environmental protection, agriculture, rural development and transport.

On this occasion, the President Cvijanović stressed that the process of EU financial assistance programming must be implemented in accordance with defined procedures, and with full respect for the constitutional competencies of all levels of government and the coordination mechanism in BiH.

This is exclusively the way, said the President Cvijanović, to enable the programming of EU assistance funds to be effective and to provide financial support to the projects that fully meet the specific needs of citizens.

The President of Srpska also met with David McAllister, the Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the European Parliament.

During the meeting, she stressed that the EU membership and regional cooperation remain a priority for the Republic of Srpska institutions, and stressed the need for activities that will accelerate the process of the European integration, including the formation of government at all levels in BiH.

Previously, the President Cvijanović also met with Marco Zanni, Head of the Identity and Democracy Group in the European Parliament and Rastislav Trnka, President of the Slovak region of Kosice, which is this year’s partner of the Republic of Srpska in the European Week of Regions and Cities event which is being held in Brussels this week.
